Lot Essay

A group of carved and polychromed wood figures representing various character types seems to have been made to enable China traders to bring back home works of art embodying the fascinating figures they encountered on their travels. While this figure fits firmly in that tradition in technique and subject matter its execution is a bit more provinicial, and the nodding head, appealing to Westerners since early in the 18th century, is unusual for the genre.
