With a leather-lined top and five crossbanded drawers, foliate-moulded ormolu handles surmounted by a crown and with monogram AR, on cabriole legs

Lot Essay

With similarities in form and handles to a desk included in a sale of Important European Furniture, Christies, London, 2nd Dec' 1998, lot 159.

With similarties to a desk at Schloss Moritzburg dating from the 1740s (G. Haase Dresdener Möbel um 18 Jahrhunderts, Leipzig, 1983, p.304, fig.119).

The escutcheon and handle displaying the Augustus Rex (d.1733) conjoined 'AR' cypher and his palm framed oval shields ensigned with the Imperial crown is on a commode in the Residenzschloss, Dresden (op.cit. fig.126, cat.38).
