This work, dated 1711, was painted in the year that Kneller was made Governor of the newly founded 'Academy for Drawing and Painting' in London. This later phase of his career was characterised by a more classical style, exemplified here by the formal garden in the background of the painting. The lighter colour palette of the present portrait is also characteristic of a shift in Kneller's style, perhaps influenced by the works of Michael Dahl.
