Lot Essay

Ormonde, foaled by Bend Or out of Lily Agnes, was bred by the 1st Duke of Westminster and was one of the greatest racehorses of his time. This picture was painted in 1886, the year he won the English Triple Crown consisting of the 2,000 Guineas, the Derby and the St. Leger. Indeed he won all of his sixteen races in the period 1885 to 1887. After his death in 1904, his skeleton was set up in the National History Museum, South Kensington.
