Lot Essay

This is perhaps the most celebrated sculpture of all antiquity. The original Borghese Gladiator was recorded in 1611 having been discovered in Nettuno and was taken to Cardinal Borghese's Estate. In 1807 it was purchased by Napoléon Bonaparte and by 1811 it was in Paris and is presently in the Louvre.
