Lot Essay

The chairs, with serpentined French 'picturesque' crestings combined with 'gothic' fretted pilaster legs in the mid-18th century 'Modern' fashion, relate to 'Parlour Chair' patterns in Robert Manwaring's The Cabinet and Chair-Maker's Real Friend and Companion, 1765 (pl. 5).
