Lot Essay

An ormolu-enriched and marquetried commode of this George III French pattern, supplied circa 1770 to the 9th Duke of Somerset, has been attributed to the Marlborough cabinet-maker Henry Hill (d. 1778) (L. Wood, Catalogue of Commodes: the Lady Lever Art Gallery, London, 1994, p. 71, fig. 55). Hill has also been credited with the manufacture of another commode that is likewise veneered in fine figured mahogany (advertised in 1938 by Stuart & Turner Ltd. and discussed ibid, p. 72, fig. 58).
