Lot Essay

This settee bears the bold lable of New York windsor chair maker John De Witt (active 1795-1799), who's shop was located at 47 Water Street in New York City. De Witt worked out of his shop of 47 Water Street from 1796 to 1797, and then relocated to 422 Pearl Street in 1798. This label is dated 1797. The dramatic baluster-turned legs with tapering feet are nearly identical to those found on a windsor arm chair labeled by De Witt that is illustrated in American Windsor Chairs by Nancy Goyne Evans pgs. 115-116.
