Lot Essay

Isaac Howard Fowle, born in Medford, Massachusetts in 1783, links Boston's eighteenth-century carving traditions to that of the nineteenth century. He was a brother-in-law to John Skillin (1745-1800) and apprenticed under John's brother, Simeon Skillin Jr. (1756-1806). Known primarily as a carver of ship's figureheads, Fowle's work can be found in the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.

This eagle sat in Pemberton Square in Boston for more than 100 years when it was acquired by a private collector.
