The presence of scooped central short drawers suggests that this high chest of drawers was probably made in north shore, Massachusetts; the fact that they are further embellished with fan-carving indicates a more sophisticated choice on the part of the original owner. A popular form, this example demonstrates refined proportions and an elegant presentation that distinguishes it from others. Similarly elegant and related high chests are illustrated in Israel Sack, American Furniture from the Israel Sack Collection, vol. 2, pp. 466-467, fig. 1147 and vol. 7, p. 1840, fig. P5073.
