Lot Essay
A pair of canterburys of similar form, attributed to Duncan Phyfe, were sold Christie's New York, The Collection of Ronald S. Kane, January 22, 1994, lot 416. This example, and those two, are identical to one Phyfe made for his daughter, Eliza Vail, which is illustrated in Nancy McClelland Duncan Phyfe and the English Regency (New York, 1939), p. 106. Two additional related examples attributed to Phyfe are illustrated in American Antiques from the Israel Sack Collection, vol. 1, no. 6 p. 132, no. 370 and John Scherer, New York Furniture at the New York State Museum (Albany, 1983), fig. 79.
