Lot Essay

The present portrait does not appear to be of Lord Heathfield of Gibraltar, as the later inscription implies. He seems instead to be an officer of the Royal Artillery and does not wear the uniform of the Light Dragoon Guard as is seen in the portrait of Lord Heathfield by Sir Joshua Reyolds in the National Gallery, London.
