Lot Essay

Inscribed 'Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-92) Portrait of Eleanor, Countess Dowager of Ormonde. She was 1st da of Nichs Morris of the court, co Dublin and of Lataragh, co. Tipperary- brn 1703- married in 1732 Walter (Butler) 17th El. of Ormonde (who d. 1783). She died 1794' (on a label on the reverse)
Further inscribed 'No. 423 in Wilson's Catalogue, & Exhibited by him at his European Museum in King St., St. James's, in 1813. It is described as "The portrait of a Lady far advanced in years"- Sir Joshua Reynolds' (on a second label on the reverse)
