The story depicted comes from Ovid's Metamorphoses Book IV, 389-90. It tells of the daughters of Minyas' refusal to partake in a Bacchanalian festival. In this scene a Satyr shares the news of the Festival with Minyas and Aleithoë while the other sisters, turned into bats by Bacchus, flee.
