A painter and designer of furniture and textiles, Johan Rohde (1856-1935) was as important as Jensen himself in developing the firm's unique style. Rohde first collaborated with Georg Jensen in 1906 when he asked Jensen to make a silver service to his design specifications. In 1917, Rohde began to work exclusively for the firm, a position that would last until his death in 1935.
Rohde is best known for designing Acorn pattern flatware and the Cosmos pattern pitcher. In contrast to Jensen's work, Rohde's was more spare in its use of ornament, illustrated by his incredibly sleek pitcher, designed in 1920 (lots 181-182). Rohde's designs also show less interest in naturalism. In contrast with George Jensen, he was influenced by historical styles, demonstrated by the Mayan pattern flatware (lot 204), and the Acanthus pattern flatware which draws upon a classical vocabulary.
