Kandinsky and Münter first stayed in Murnau on the Staffelsee some 70 kilometers south of Munich in the summer of 1908. Together they painted a significant number of brilliant small panels in enamel colours of the best views of the area. Frequently they would work side by side on similar views and Kandinsky even went so far as to paint one of these small panels to capture the spirit of the moment. The painting of Münter at her easel simply titled Murnau - Gabriele Münter beim Malen (R.& B.222) is today housed in the Gabriele Münter und Johannes Eichner Stiftung in Munich.
This oil of Münter at work also holds a key significance for the present work; from it we can deduce a great deal more about the subject of Vom Griesbraukeller (Haus am Staffelsee) .The reverse of the small panel is simply inscribed 'G.Munter beim Malen der Tochter von Griesbrauwirt'.The young girl in the oil is therefore the daughter of the owner of the Griesbrau inn on the Staffelsee. Further research reveals that it was at this very inn that Münter and Kandinsky were staying whilst they were on their romantic visit to Staffelsee. They stayed at the Griesbrau from mid-August to the 30th September 1908. The present oil is a view from the inn.
This idyllic summer trip led to a small but fine body of work by both artists who were painting at their very best in the perfect surroundings. Significant other works from this period are in the collections of the Lenbachhaus in Munich, the Musée Nationale d'Art Moderne, Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
