A PAIR OF MEISSEN CHINOISERIE CHOCOLATE CUPS, COVERS AND SAUCERS
CIRCA 1740, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARKS, PRESSNUMMER 64 TO ONE SAUCER, INDISTINCT PRESSNUMMER TO OTHER
Painted by C.F. Herold, the cups with double-scroll handles, the sides with vignettes of Oriental figures at various persuits, the interiors richly gilt, the domed covers with similar vignettes flanking flower finials above Gitterwerk borders, the richly gilt cover interiors reserved with ogival quatrefoil panels edged with black lines and enclosing deutsche Blumen, the cup interiors richly gilt, the saucers with similar scenes of Orientals within similar cartouches against a richly gilt ground, the undersides with Gitterwerk borders (rims of cups and flanges on interior of covers with small areas of wear to gilding, small chip to the interior scroll of one handle, probably from time of manufacture, very minor chipping to petals of finials) (2)
