The two youths modelled by J.P. Melchior as a smith and a cooper, the smith in a pale-blue cap, white shirt, puce breeches and leather apron, beating the red-hot tip of a iron rod, the anvil of waisted plinth form, on a jagged base coloured and modelled to simulate paving, the cooper wearing a white cap with a puce border, a flowered turquoise-trimmed waistcoat and puce breeches, chisseling the base of a large up-turned tub, on a shaped grassy mound base (peak of smith's cap restored, cooper with restoration to right side of body and abdomen, minute fritting to edge of bases and minute areas of wear to enamels)
