Lot Essay

According to a note on the stretcher, the present lot was executed circa 1820 in the opinion of Herman Voss.

The artist spent the majority of his life in Italy and Germany, where he achieved a considerable reputation as a landscape painter. Wallis turned to literary subjects after 1800.
