Lot Essay

Dr Marian Bisanz-Prakken has confirmed the authenticity of this work, which will be included in her forthcoming addition to the Klimt catalogue raisonné.

This drawing is a rediscovered variation of the subject seen in numbers 1669, 1681, 1688 in A. Strobl, Gustav Klimt. Die Zeichnungen, 1904-1912, vol. II, Salzburg, 1982 (illustrated pp. 145, 147, 149). According to Dr Bisanz-Prakken, it was drawn circa 1907-08 and it is one of the preliminary studies for the Tanzerin in Die Erwartung section of the Stoclet mosaic wall frieze created by Klimt for the Stoclet Palais, Brussels, in a building designed by Joseph Hoffmann. Klimt started to work on the frieze around 1906 and completed it in 1911.
