The 1937 America's Cup pitted Endeavour II and Ranger, the two most technologically advanced J-class yachts ever to be built. In the first two races Harold Vanderbilt sailed Ranger conservatively, and won the races by over 15 minutes each. In the next two races, his competitive nature came to play and Ranger easily controlled the start of the third race, and pushed Endeavour II over early in the fourth to handily defend the America's Cup. Ranger became known as the 'super' J.
