Taking place just a few months after the first part of Shannon's Mathematical Theory of Communication was published (see lot 180), and almost simultaneously with the publication of the second part of that work this was THE FIRST SYMPOSIUM ON WHAT CAME TO BE CALLED COMMUNICATION THEORY OR INFORMATION THEORY. It was sponsored by the Department of Defence's Research and Development Board. Pages 14-23 contain Claude Shannon's paper, "Significance and application [of communication research]."
