A French Neo-Grec patinated bronze vase on torchere, mounted as a lamp

The vase with bulbous body flanked to each side by a winged sphinx draped with 'pearls' and medallions, the torchère with circular top, the faux-bambou stem surmounted by three cranes issuing chains, above triple lion monopodiae mounted with Classical female busts, on flat feet joined by a concaved stretcher
Overall: 69¼ in. (176 cm.) high

Lot Essay

A cast-iron torchère of very closely related design to the present lot was shown on the stand of the fondeur Ducel at the 1878 Paris Exposition universelle (see The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue of the Paris International Exhibition, London, 1878, p. 52).
