Lot Essay

Originally entitled The Clansman after the novel on which it is based, D.W. Griffith's racist film The Birth Of A Nation was the first film to be screened at the White House for President Woodrow Wilson. However loathsome the politics of the film, it is recognised as the first epic of the cinema. A young John Ford appears as a sinister, hooded Klan extra.
