DESIGNING THE ARC DE TRIOMPHE. An important document concerning the early designs and construction of the Arc de Triomphe. Napoleon decided to build the great Arch honoring the Grand Army in 1806. The architect Chalgrin submitted plans, which Napoleon approved, on 27 March 1809. Here he submits a supplemental design of one of the facades, which Napoleon endorses: "Approved less the decorations which aren't suitable."
