Lot Essay
This Welsh chair has exceptionally sculptural qualities, where the naturally shaped arm bow is set high from the seat in the manner of many self-made Celtic Windsors, and is supported on hand-shaped spindles which have clear facets created by a draw-knife. The unusual front spindles are hand cut to create multiple rings. Underneath the seat the roughly cleft surface has been partially levelled with a side axe and a gouge, marks which serve to emphasise the sculptural qualities of this chair and brings us in closer contact with the physical processes of making this chair.
