Of usual pear-shaped form with a silver top rim (unmarked) with a lambrequin motif along lower edge and a (possibly later) applied silver shield to front engraved with the crowned initials 'C S 1680', the handle has an attached silver mounted leather collar inscribed 'C III S'

The following is an extract from Oliver Baker's forward, in his book on the subject Black Jacks and Leather Bottells, Jan 1921, describing the first time he saw a black jack ''......the singular but delicious contour, the rich surface of the leather worn to a silky smoothness round the handle, came to me as a revelation, the thrill of which is even now quite unforgettable''.
