Lot Essay

This late 18th/early 19th century dresser from South Wales has not only the general characteristics of the area, but also the regional features of dressers made in Carmarthenshire, where the frieze below the drawers is deep and straight; the lower shelf and the back boards to the shelves are made of white pine which is painted: the top two shelves are set wide apart in order to hold large decorative meat plates standing on end. The blacksmith-made iron hooks along the top frieze are original and would have held a display of the 'blue and white', lustre, or gaudy-ware jugs so characteristic. Other examples of dressers of this design and its variants can be seen in the Carmarthenshire County Museum, Carmarthen.
