Lot Essay

The ivory diptych panels in this lot can be traced to the celebrated collection of Mr Victor Gay. This was dispersed after his death in 1887, much of the collection being acquired by the Louvre in Paris. When mentioning these panels in his definitive Les Ivoires Gothiques Francais, (Paris, Auguste Picard, 1924, page 180), Raymond Koechlin casts doubt on their supposed Medieval manufacture.
