Provenance: WHITELANDS COLLEGE (prize label, the book awarded to Elizabeth Birdsell, and signed by the May Queen for 1899, Agnes Gourlay, and the Principal of the College, Joan Ruskin Severn, daughter of Ruskin's cousin); Alexander Stone (library label). Annually from 1881 John Ruskin commissioned these special bindings for 30 or 40 of his works to be donated to the College as prizes for their May Queen celebration.
