PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF T. GORDON LITTLE (LOTS 539-696) 1915 - 2004 "By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures." With these verses from the Book of Proverbs, Thomas Gordon Little, pre-eminent decorator of houses in Atlanta and beyond for half a century, defined a philosophy of decorating approached from a perspective that was aesthetic but also intellectual and spiritual. Although conceptually quite cerebral, his acute sensitivity produced interiors which were always appropriate but surprisingly eclectic and never contrived. They possessed exquisite clarity and pared-down elegance which were instantly recognizable and lauded. Mr. Little never pursued fads; yet, his style seemed current, while maintaining honesty and glamour which are timeless. He never sought publicity, but his work set the bar extraordinarily high and influenced countless others. Mr. Little was a serious thinker and an insatiable reader. He had a wicked sense of humor and was interested in many things from the music of Bette Midler and Lena Horne to the poetry of T. S. Eliot to the latest fashions to reflecting on the meaning of life and mortality. He devised word games to play on license plates and planned a cookbook. He possessed enviable creativity and an infallible eye. Thomas Gordon Little, a handsome man with a beautiful voice, was born in Oshawa Ontario, Canada. He was interested in the arts from childhood. As a young man, he answered an ad for a decorator at a Toronto department store. Untrained, he checked out a book on decorating, read it overnight, and got the job. Later, the store offered a course at Parson's School of Design for the best dress design. Mr. Little won and was off to New York, never dreaming that, one day, his favorite commission would be in the elegant pre-war building designed by Rosario Candela at 960 Fifth Avenue. From Parsons, he moved to Atlanta and became part of a group of young painters, poets, and actors; some became legendary. Eventually, he opened a shop on historic Peachtree Street filled with important furniture and objets d'art purchased for beloved clients. Throughout his life, he retained an interest in architecture. Proceeds from this sale will benefit the T. Gordon Little Foundation, Inc., established to aid gifted students of architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. -Peggy K. Dennis
