The frosted gilt three-quarter plate movement numbered 51971 with free-sprung bimetallic balance, diamond endstone, blued steel special hairspring with Phillip's end-curves, English lever escapement, Schoof's patent spring banking, jewelled throughout, the white enamel dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds, blued steel spade hands, in plain open-face case with screwed back, inscribed Snap-on in the dust cover, the winding crown with screwed water resistant silver cover and a length of silver chain

Lot Essay

Water resistant pocketwatches were used for geological expeditions or for travel in particularly humid climates. Schoof's patent spring banking was a form of resilient escapement to prevent damage to the mechanism in the event of a violent shock.
