A French miniature silver compass sundial and case
Roch Blondeau Paris. Third quarter 17th Century
The oval silver dial plate with engraved hour scale IIII-XII, I-VIII with quarter-hour subdivisions, engraved scroll ends and a central rosette, the glazed compass with engraved North-South line and N, and a blued-iron needle with brass cap, the sprung folding gnomon with floral decoration, set for [?]48°, the underside with spring bar bisecting the engraved signature, stylised petals on the underside of the compass box, and two turned silver feet. The oval wooden case lined with purple plush and covered in black fishskin, with silver hinge and two hooks and eyes (one hook broken), signed Roch Blondeau Paris
