A very rare Japanese gilt-metal clockwatch with jade bell
Thomas Swetman, London, No. 4540. Third quarter 18th Century
The movement with circular gilt-brass plates secured by four elaborately pierced and engraved pillars, chain fusee and verge escapement with foliate pierced balance cock with glass cover, silver reguator disc, the backplate signed Tho Swetman LONDON 4540, small spring barrel for the strike via a single steel hammer on the jade bell housed within the elaborate foliate pierced and engraved watch case, the gilt circular dial with movable steel Japanese chapters revolving in a clockwise fashion against an elaborately pierced blued steel hand
