An early brass and iron small table clock
Probably French. Circa 1580
The dial with touchpieces to the inner concentric chapter rings with outer ring calibrated I to XII with star half hour markers, the inner ring calibrated 13 to 24, later? iron arrowhead hand, the centre engraved with a stellar design, the movement with circular iron plates, the three chamfered pillars riveted to the dial plate and pinned to the skeletonised backplate, capped spring barrel, brass long thin fusee with iron wheel, the verge and contrate wheels with typical sculpted iron potances secured with pins to the movement pillars, unusual crenellated iron later balance wheel with two visible holes set into the steel linkwork between the fusee bridge and barrel click for hog's hair bristles, the drum-shaped case well engraved with foliage and three portrait busts of male heads adorned with laurel wreaths within frames with geometric decoration, the detachable base plate further engraved with foliage and punched with the letter B in a circle on either side of the winding hole
