A gilt-brass striking table clock
Case probably German, circa 1630; movement by Keith Davis. Circa 1965
The case of tabernacle form with moulded and foliate cast and chased plinth base on bun feet, the dial plate similarly chased and engraved with foliage and fruit, the silver Roman dial with foliate engraved centre and single tulip-shaped steel hand, the left side panel removable and engraved with formalised foliage issuing from an urn, the now fixed right side panel with similar decoration, the reverse dial with small silver chapter ring for the hours calibrated I to XII and with later blued steel arrowhead hand, the later purpose-made movement with square-section pillars and two transverse mounted trains, the going train with brass spring barrel with pinned caps, gut fusee, verge escapement with rear swinging bob pendulum, the strike train with brass spring barrel with pinned caps and gut fusee, the strike via a hammer carried on a vertical steel arbor to a bell housed within the restored gallery cupola above
