A fine German gilt-brass and iron striking table clock with alarm
Attributed to Michael Gruber, Nuremberg. Dated 1577
The iron movement with four square-section pillars with decorative mouldings to the tops and bases, the going train with fusee and chain, capped spring barrel, the escapement now converted to verge with front-swinging pendulum, the strike train with chain fusee and capped spring barrel, calibrated steel countwheel planted on the backplate and visible through an aperture in the back of the case, the hours being struck on a gilt bell above the movement secured to an iron hoop with a later finial, the alarm train with a sub-assembly to the right side of the plates with open spring and clapper strike on the bell above the movement, the dial within a gilt-metal ring with touchpieces enclosing the later silvered chapter ring engraved with the Roman chapters and with later steel hands, alarm-set disc to the centre, the dial plate engraved with two portrait medallions beneath the chapter ring, the side doors flanked by straight columns engraved with foliage and centred by elaborate engravings of the Labours of Hercules, the left hand side plate stamped on the inside *1577* and the maker's mark MG within a shield, the numeral V overstamped with the number VI, the rear panel engraved with a similar scene from the Labours of Hercules and centred at the top by the initials MHSI & GH, the gallery above with four gilt-brass urn finials and centred by gilt-brass lunette gallery portraits of male and female busts, the whole movement standing on a concave-moulded and foliate engraved base
