Lot Essay

The designs executed by the carpenter joiner Joseph Sanderson, (circa 1690-1747), reflect the George II 'Roman' fashion derived in part from that of Inigo Jones (d. 1652) and promoted by Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington through his architect protégés, such as William Kent (d. 1748) and by publications such as J. Vardy, Some Designs of Mr. Inigo Jones and Mr.William Kent, 1744.
