The circular plate in a reeded ebonised slip and deep frame studded with balls, surmounted by an eagle on a rock and flanked by dragons, the apron centred by a shell issuing foliage, the reverse with maker's label 'REED Painter, Gilder AND PICTURE FRAME MAKER Northallerton, 1840'

John Reed of Northallerton, North Yorkshire is first recorded in Bain's Trade Directory, 1823 as a painter and gilder. He is also recorded in White's Directory & Gazeteer, 1840 as painter and gilder.
