Lot Essay

The pastoral trophies, designed in the French 'picturesque' manner in celebration of the Cardinal Art of Music and poetry's triumph, comprise string and wind instruments ribbon-tied with horns that are wreathed with laurels, vines and oak leaves. Such trophies, invented by A. Watteau, were engraved by G. Huquier in the 1730s. Related 'Arts and Science' trophies were executed in the 1750s for Norfolk House, London (D. Fitz-Gerald, 'The Norfolk House Music Room', Victoria & Albert Museum, London, 1973).
