Lot Essay

A similarly painted caddy was acquired by the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1919 (G. Walkling, Tea Caddies, 1985, fig. 54). A pair was sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 12 November 1999, lot 34. A further caddy, similarly decorated with Italianate landscapes, bears the stamp of Henry Clay of King Street, Covent Garden (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1660-1840, London, 1996, fig 201).
