Lot Essay

The candlesticks, with vase-capped pillars, are designed in the George III Roman fashion; while their 'altar' plinths display golden 'Apollo' sunburst medallions in sky blue tablets. These orb-supported plinths correspond to the 1781 'patent' base introduced by the celebrated glass manufacturer William Parker and closely related plinths feature on a set of candelabra that have been dated to the 1790s (M. Mortimer, The English Glass Chandelier, Woodbridge, 2000, pls. 6 and 55).
