Lot Essay

H. G. Parnall founded his Grocers' Shop Fittings business in 1820. From his warehouse on Narrow Wine Street in Bristol, he supplied a plethora of different fittings and was able to accommodate most shops' requirements. Not only was Parnall a skilled businessman, owning an iron, brass and steam foundry, he was also something of an inventor, designing a set of suspension weighing scales that were particularly useful to tea dealers when measuring tea. By 1893, his business was described as immense and employed 10 representatives on the road as well as another 400 men in their Bristol workshops and showroom.
