Lot Essay

The chest's columnar corners, a popular 'Roman' feature of mid-18th century clock cases, also appears in patterns published in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1791-3, and in contemporary work by Gillows of London and Lancaster.
