The rectangular dished padded top covered in oatmeal material, on cabriole legs carved with C-scrolls, joined by an arched stretcher with carved foliage and centred by a pierced foliate cartouche, the ends with baluster stretchers, on scrolled feet, one rail inscribed in pencil '7' and '8', one pierced cartouche replaced

Sale room notice
A stool of this model is at Badminton House, Gloucestershire and can be associated with a payment made in 1773 to the Golden Square cabinet-makers John Mayhew and William Ince, for £15.10s. Another painted stool, closely related to this model was at Worcester Lodge, Badminton House (Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 595). The pattern of both stools is derived from Ince & Mayhew's Universal System of Household Furniture, plate XXXIV.

Lot Essay

The design derives from patterns for Lady's Dressing Stools in William Ince and John Mayhew's Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762, pl. XXXIV.
