This elliptic form of commode, introduced around 1780, was popularised in 1788 by Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide; while that year's sketch-book of Gillows of London and Lancaster also featured one such chest of drawers flanked by corner commodes (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, Royston, 1995, no. 121).
