Lot Essay

The two major influences on Harpignies's artistic development are the brilliant southern light of the Bay of Naples and Capri, which he visited in 1849-1852, and the landscapes of the Barbizon School, in particular those by Corot. He exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1853-1912. He is best known for his landscapes and views of Paris and is particularly associated with central France and the countryside surrounding the Rivers Loire, Nièvre and Allier.
