Lot Essay

The antique-fluted, taper-hermed and laurel-wreathed pedestal is designed in the George II 'Roman' style popularised by the Rome-trained architect William Kent (d. 1748). Its fluted and acanthus-flowered enrichments also feature in patterns for 'Therms for Busts or Lamps' issued in William Ince and John Mayhew's The Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762, pl. 8.
