Lot Essay

The torcheres lambrequined, fretted and hermed pillar relates closely to that of candlestands supplied in the late 1690s for Hampton Court Palace by Jean Pelletier; while its tripod 'claw' is carved with eagle-heads, relating to those of candlestands he supplied for the Palace in 1701 (T.Murdoch, 'Jean, Rene and Thomas Pelletier, Part 1', Burlington Magazine, November 1997, pp. 733 and 736, figs. 3 and 6).
