Lot Essay

The reeded columns, concave-sided platforms and truss-scrolled frieze ends relate to a pair of Scottish tables with a label inscribed 'Rathpey' and sold anonymously, Christie's London, 10 July 2003, lot 38. The scrolled truss bracket at each end of the frieze may be a distinctive Scottish feature, seen on a Library table by Andrew Fleming (D. Jones, The Edinburgh Cabinet and Chair Makers' Books of Prices 1805-1825, Kirkaldy, 2000, p. 16, fig. 26).
